Kathy’s Treehouse
Design/Build: Wild Tree Woodworks
Redmond, Washington
Kathy reached out to us after seeing pictures of her friend Shiraz’s treehouse — The Mistwood Treehouse — which we built in 2020. Kathy was imagining a tranquil place to which she could escape, but also a treehouse that her two teenagers would enjoy. She had a phenomenal grove of cedar trees to build in and she wanted to do something special. David took care with the design, and Kathy provided nuanced feedback during the design phase.
For spacial and visual interest, David designed three volumes and two outdoor spaces. The tower is the most striking feature, and a smaller room with a canted wall adds to the whimsical feel. Custom-milled cedar siding and decking were a must. The siding on the tower exterior, as well as the interior walls and ceiling, are salvaged and FSC-certified woods from Pacific Northwest Timbers and Good Wood PDX. All of the windows and doors were reclaimed or made by hand. A circular stained glass window is the show piece, built by Patterson Design.
Working within Kathy’s budget, the project was split into two phases of construction over seven months. Kathy was a generous host to Ben, Johannes, Charlie, and Peter. The crew felt very appreciated, and they enjoyed the fine carpentry on this memorable project.
“We are loving the treehouse, and have already drank many mugs of tea up in the trees.”
