Mountainside Adventure
Early plans for this unique project included a covered refuge, a long cable bridge, a treehouse, and zip lines. The initial vision aimed to build near a creek on the property, but inspiration proved stronger when we climbed higher on the nearby mountain. Inspiring vistas, a delicate landscape, and glacial erratics gestured toward many possibilities.
It was a pleasure to work with our client Scott, who has a keen eye for design, functionality, and use. Horizontal movement, mystery, and adventure were some of the key ideas that we hoped would engage both children and adults. After thoughtful collaboration, we decided to build an enclosed fort beneath a large boulder; a tree-supported platform with access from another boulder; a fort enclosed by a screen of peeled poles; and a floating pathway connecting all the elements which we called “the lily pad path”.
The work onsite was challenging and rewarding. We hand-carried materials uphill to the site, taking care to tread lightly on the land. The structures were built primarily with oiled Douglas-fir. The organic nature of the design concept encouraged creative input by everyone, which made for a truly collaborative and satisfying project.
“We are just over-the-top delighted with your wonderful work, and your fantastic people. To say it is a big hit would be a huge understatement. Thank you!”
