The Roost Treehouse

treehouse in spectacular setting

The spectacular setting for this project continues to inspire us. Carrying this treehouse are two Ponderosa Pines, one Douglas-fir, and one Oregon White Oak — an unusual combination of trees that reflect their distinct ecosystem.

This treehouse is featured in the Nelson Treehouse & Supply 2022 calendar.

Design/Build:  Wild Tree Woodworks

White Salmon, Washington

What a wonderful project this was. Our clients Marilyn and Reed desired a treehouse to be used not only as an accommodation for themselves, but also as a schoolhouse: their daughter is a teacher.

Charlee McClellan conducted the initial site visit and photogrammetry, identifying a phenomenal stand of trees in a remarkable setting. David used Charlee’s data to create a conceptual design, then worked with Marilyn through multiple design iterations to find the perfect treehouse. Charlee made a 3D model of the design and the crew began planning.

To build in the chosen trees required thoughtful site logistics. We employed a high-line cable, and we built much of the treehouse at the top of the hill. Our planning payed off and the build went smoothly. Marilyn desired a responsibly built treehouse, so we sourced FSC-certified reclaimed materials:  the exterior siding, the interior wall paneling, and the pine ceiling. A local sawyer milled the cedar decking and railings. Marilyn provided a “hodge-podge” of interesting windows, as she liked to say. We placed them into the design and happily installed them.

Many creative hands contributed to the construction of this special structure. We excited for so many children to be inspired by this treehouse and its setting!

“What can I say? Thank you seems so little for all that you’ve done for us! You said we would have a whimsical creation, but we truly did not expect this level of craftsmanship! You and your crew were such a joy!! Thank you so much!”

– Marilyn A.
