The Salal Treehouse
The setting couldn’t be better for this classic Pacific Northwest treehouse: a forest of Douglas-firs in a sea of salal.
Bob was referred to us through one of our former clients. When Bob saw his friend’s treehouse (the Brook Trout Treehouse) and heard about his friend’s experience with the Wild Tree Woodworks crew, he was excited to get in touch and imagine a treehouse for his own family.
When David arrived for a site visit, he, Bob, and Bob’s wife Keiko walked the family property and talked about what they were hoping to build. The vision soon became clear: a playhouse for their kids, ages 10 and 12. With many trees to choose from, David identified three that could work for the project. The trees were in an ideal location but not in an ideal arrangement. Thankfully, we are able to employ attachment systems specifically designed to support tree structures with unusual tree arrangements.
As the design for the treehouse developed, the family decided to add on a zip-line and a firepole. Reclaimed windows and an old door were a must. Later, we included a set of built-in shelves to hold games and books.
One unusual aspect of this build is a tree penetrating the structure. In order to gain square footage, David designed the treehouse around one of the main trees and it is now a central part of the interior decor. The crew tackled the challenge of sealing in the tree to keep the space water-proof, and the final product is one of the more unique and fun elements of this build.
Our crew consisted primarily of Ben and Johannes, with additional carpentry contributed by Brian and David. Ballard Forge fabricated a steel yoke-bracket to help support the treehouse, which is sitting on Nelson Treehouse & Supply hardware. Patterson Design created a pair of beautiful stained glass windows to bring colorful light into the playhouse. Even the family participated in the build, peeling all the railing pickets that would line the platform.
We are very happy with the way this project turned out. David commented, “The setting is phenomenal and it brings to life this classic looking treehouse.” The clients are pleased with their new playhouse in the trees and quickly enjoyed having friends and family over to see it. Bob and Keiko’s daughter even made a table out of left-over wood from the build.
The build was completed over six weeks, and finished within budget. The overall project was satisfying for everyone and resulted in a stunning little treehouse.
